CampusMemo schedule

The May 22 edition of CampusMemo will be the last of the spring semester. During the summer, CampusMemo will be published twice: on June 12 and July 17. Regular weekly publication will resume on Aug. 14.

Web of Science trial results

The Library staff thanks the faculty, staff members and students who participated in the trial of Scopus as an alternative database for the content faculty and students are accustomed to obtaining through Web of Science. There were 38 respondents to the survey, of whom 25 were faculty. Almost two-thirds of respondents use Web of Science to support their research, with just over 25 percent using it to support both teaching and research. The majority of respondents use it at least several times a month, with almost 41 percent using it more than once a week. Those responding to the question about replacing Web of Science with Scopus were almost evenly split. Reasons for retaining Web of Science included coverage, quality and reliability, and ease of use.

Given the feedback from the campus, the Library will continue to subscribe to Web of Science for 2017-18.

Spring Clean-Up, May 30-June 9

Administration & Finance (A&F) will host a Spring Clean-Up to help faculty and staff clear out unwanted items.

Junk item collection
Submit a work order at and enter "Spring Clean-Up" in the description field of the service request. A&F will cover the cost of those work orders placed from May 31 to June 7. The items will be picked up throughout the summer.

Hazardous materials and universal waste
Contact Marsha Elliott from Environment, Health and Safety to coordinate removal via email at or by calling (925) 922-0391. Label your items "EHS PICK UP." Departments and individuals are encouraged to get rid of chemicals that are no longer needed or used. Examples include old/expired/unknown chemicals, chemical containers that are damaged or nearly empty and other specialty items, such as batteries, lamps or refrigerators.

The Confidential Data Policy governs items that contain or may contain confidential data, including papers and University-owned electronics with non-volatile memory. Non-volatile memory electronics, working or not, must be disposed of via the University's e-waste vendor or transferred to another University department; they cannot be put in the Goodwill bins. Papers with Level 1 or Level 2 data must be disposed of in secure shred bins. View the e-waste FAQ.

Coming soon: calendar with students, faculty and staff

At the end of this week, students, faculty and staff will be able to see each other's calendar availability. Currently, students cannot see faculty and staff availability, nor can faculty and staff see student availability. SF State Microsoft Exchange will be updated to enable calendar sharing between and users. This will provide a basis for future Exchange improvements and also streamline the transition for students who become employees and vice versa.

These changes will be made on Friday, May 26, between 6 and 9 p.m. During this time, email and Exchange calendars will continue to be available. Call for Proposals: "How to Be a University in a World of Conflict"

SF State is launching a major initiative for the 2017-18 academic year: A Year of Conversation, co-sponsored by the Office of the President, the Office of the Provost and the Academic Senate, will offer a platform and structure for our community to explore existential questions about what it means to be a university in a world of conflict, what kind of institution we are and want to be, and what our students need from us in order to become tomorrow's leaders. Proposals are invited for workshops that foster campus conversation and strengthen our shared capacity for mutual understanding, community and engagement. Workshops can take many forms -- such as reading groups, colloquia with visitors, skill-building exercises and more -- in order to address our defining question: "how to be a university in a world of conflict." Led by faculty, workshops will be open to all members of the SF State community as participants or co-organizers.

Feminist Theory and Music Conference, July 27-30

The College of Liberal & Creative Arts and the School of Theatre and Dance will sponsor the 14th International Biennial Feminist Theory and Music Conference on July 27-30. This year's theme, "Still I Rise," embraces Maya Angelou's poem and explores music in relation to the African Diaspora, diverse communities, feminism, gender and sexuality. Live music, panels and scholarly papers will highlight a wide range of topics, including the work of distinguished SF State alumnus Pauline Oliveros (1932-2016). Visit for more information.

Fall SF BUILD mini-grant application deadline

SF State faculty whose research relates to health inequalities in communities in San Francisco are encouraged to apply for a fall SF BUILD mini-grant. This year, a UCSF faculty collaborator is required. Priority will be given to proposals that address issues of social justice and health inequalities that are relevant to SF State students and their communities. Mini-grants of up to $40,000 each will be awarded to four successful applicants.

Academic Technology Summer Institute 2017

The two-day, in-depth Academic Technology Summer Institute is designed for those who are new to iLearn or would like to learn more about the wide array of technology tools and services available to instructors. Don't miss this opportunity to meet your colleagues and expand your skills and knowledge. Institutes are hands-on, with interactive demonstrations and engaging activities.

Three identical sessions will be offered:

  • Session 1, June 6 and 7, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Session 2, July 11 and 12, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Session 3, August 8 and 9, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Redesign Our Majors Symposium, August 19

SF State's Division of Undergraduate Education and Academic Planning will host the CSU Redesigning Our Majors Symposium on Saturday, Aug.19. This symposium brings together departments and faculty from across the CSU who are at various stages of curricular redesign to discuss strategies, tools and opportunities for success. Learn about developing interdisciplinary curricula, revising outdated program learning outcomes, adapting to changing accreditation standards, merging programs and departments, embracing shared governance in curricular design, strategic processes of redesign, and more.

Enrollment spaces available at Children's Campus

The Children's Campus at SF State has several openings for enrollment for the 2017-18 program year beginning in August. Children's Campus is a child care facility for children ages 6 months to 5 years old. Priority enrollment is given to SF State faculty and staff. The Children's Campus is offering enrollment for toddler and preschool classrooms. There are several part-time openings and limited full-time openings.

UndocuAlly Training for staff and faculty, July 27

Staff and faculty are invited to participate in a summer UndocuAlly training. The training has been designed to guide the SF State community in learning how to support the undocumented student population. Participants will receive an overview of immigration history, recent legislation and ways to support DREAMers' common post-election challenges while hearing the stories of current SF State students and learning about resources available for current and prospective undocumented students. Space is limited, so interested staff and faculty members are asked to register in advance at

LINK+ transitions to CSU+

The LINK+ service, which makes books that are checked out or not available at the J. Paul Leonard Library accessible from other libraries, will be transitioning this spring and summer to a new CSU-wide service called CSU+. The last date for SF State faculty, staff and students to request to borrow books using LINK+ will be Friday, May 26. Between May 27 and July 9, all requests to borrow books will be handled using ILLIad. Beginning July 10, SF State faculty, students and staff will be able to place requests to borrow books from other CSU libraries using the new OneSearch and CSU+ services.

  • Announcement from Senator Lisy-Wagner: The College of Liberal and Creative Arts would be having its first Undergraduate Research and Creative Arts Showcase on Thursday, May 10, at the Seven Hills Conference Center.
  • Announcement from Senator Senator Gen: In August there will be a CSU-wide Redesigning Our Majors symposium. Admission is free, and any department or unit may attend and participate.
  • Announcement from Senator Reyes: The senator referenced a "toxic campus environment for Muslims and Arab faculty and students" and urged everyone to stand strong against bullying, harassment and for social justice.
  • Announcement for Senator Williams: Membership in the Mashouf Center will open at the beginning of the Fall semester.
  • Chair's Report: Chair Carleton welcomed new senators and reviewed policies developed and approved this year and resolutions approved this year. This list is posted on the Senate website. Chair Carleton also reviewed preliminary plans for the new UClub that will be housed on the mezzanine level of the Cesar Chavez Student Center.

  • Report from Shelia Tully, president of the SF State chapter of the California Faculty Association (CFA), on the status of the CFA and bargaining.

College of Science and Engineering

SF State Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy AKM Newaz, Teaching Associate Sauraj Jha, electrical engineering student Alexander Yore and graduate student Kyle Ray were among the co-authors of the research paper "Photoresponse of Natural van der Waals Heterostructures," which was recently published by the nanotechnology journal ACS Nano.

Asian American Studies and School of Social Work

School of Social Work Associate Professor Yeon-Shim Lee and Asian American Studies Professor Grace Yoo published a co-authored article, "The Role of Religiousness/Spirituality and Social Networks in Predicting Depressive Symptoms among Older Korean Americans," in The Journal of Cross Cultural Gerontology. In this study, Lee and Yoo found that nearly 30 percent of older Korean participants had mild or severe depressive symptoms, substantially higher than other populations. Using a robust modeling technique of best-subsets regression analyses, they found that the best model fit for depressive symptoms involved four optimal predictors: physical health, religious/spiritual coping skills, social networks and annual household income. Findings suggest that religiousness/spirituality and social networks are vital to coping with adaptation and stressful life events.

School of Music

Christine Brandes, a soprano and assistant professor of music, performed the world premiere of Eric Moe's composition "Tough Songs About Death" at ODC Theater in San Francisco on May 15. The San Francisco chamber music ensemble Earplay presented the performance and commissioned the composition.

A legacy on trial

SF State Professor of Political Science Robert C. Smith was quoted in a Black Press USA article about differing perspectives on the upcoming sexual assault trial of comedian Bill Cosby. "Although it's unfortunate Cosby's co-stars have lost income because no one will air his shows, his punishment is fitting because it sends an unmistakable message that the sexual abuse of women will not be tolerated, no matter the man's status, legacy or otherwise praiseworthy endeavors," Smith said.
