At the turn of the millennium, SFSU debuted our official alumni magazine. Twenty-five years and 51 issues later, SF State Magazine is an award-winning publication read by tens of thousands of Gator alumni. The Fall/Winter 2025 issue is now available online and in print. 

Issue highlights:

Car and MUNI train on 19th Avenue

Caltrans is kicking off the 19th Avenue (State Route 1) Rehabilitation Project, a major effort to improve one of San Francisco’s busiest corridors. Phase 1 construction started Dec. 1 on northbound 19th Avenue at Sloat Boulevard, working north toward Lincoln Way. 

Phase 1 (December): 

  • Work begins at Sloat Boulevard, working north to Lincoln Way.
  • Parking strip repaving first, then full lane repaving scheduled for spring – summer 2026.

Traffic impacts: 

  • Lane reductions will be in place from Mondays – Fridays, 7 a.m. – 3 p.m.
  • Two lanes will remain open each direction.
  • Some bus stops may be relocated temporarily.

The SFSU men’s and women’s basketball teams will host their “Purple Out” games on Thursday, Dec. 4 when they take on Cal State East Bay in the San Francisco Federal Credit Union Gymnasium on campus. The women’s game tips off at 5:30 p.m.; the men’s game tips off at 7:30 p.m. The first 100 fans will receive a purple SF State T-shirt. 
 
All Gator Athletics regular-season home contests are free for SFSU students, faculty and staff. Please visit the Athletics website to download your Gator pass

The Division of Undergraduate Education and Academic Planning wants to foster a collaboration between tenure-line faculty from across campus to create an interdisciplinary 24-unit B.A. degree that focuses on skills needed for the workforce of the future. Faculty from each college are encouraged to participate.  

Work will begin in January with an aim to submit the proposal in February and complete campus review before May. A stipend will be provided for work in January. If you want to be involved in the design of this degree, please email a response to the following statement to UEAP@sfsu.edu by Monday, Dec. 8: “To be ready for the workforce of the future, students need to be able to.” Answer in 100 words or three learning outcomes.

Join the College of Liberal & Creative Arts’ “Research First: A First-Year Showcase of the College Undergraduate Research Experience” on Monday, Dec. 1, 2 – 3:15 p.m., and Thursday, Dec. 4, 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., in Library 121. The showcase will feature undergraduate research from lower-division classes. Light refreshments will be provided. 

Celebrate the undergraduate student artists of SFSU's School of Art in the 38th annual Stillwell Student exhibition. It will be open Tuesday, Dec. 2, – Thursday, Dec. 11, including Saturday, Dec. 6, in the Fine Arts Gallery (Fine Arts 238). Regular hours are noon – 4 p.m. Tuesdays – Fridays. 

All students enrolled in a School of Art class were eligible to submit up to two works for consideration by the jury. The exhibition was juried, designed and installed by the students of the ART 619: “Exhibition Design” course taught by Kevin B. Chen. The exhibition also includes a selection of work by the late Leo D. Stillwell.

The “AI Literacy Essentials: Introduction to Generative AI” course introduces generative artificial intelligence (AI) to those with little or no prior experience engaging with this emerging technology. It will be held Wednesday, Dec. 3, 10:30 a.m. – noon, via Zoom. 

Participants obtain a foundational understanding of generative AI, its associated opportunities and implications, and basic strategies for composing and iterating prompts. Participants will be expected to engage in hands-on interaction with the Microsoft Copilot chatbot to begin generating practical outputs for personal and professional use cases.  

This course is an elective that counts toward receiving a digital badge for the AI Literacy Education Program

 
 

Join San Francisco Federal Investment Services and Wealth Management for a seminar Wednesday, Dec. 3, 5:30 – 7 p.m., at its branch on 770 Golden Gate Ave. in San Francisco. If you’ve been thinking about investing or simply want to feel more confident about your financial decisions, this in-person session is a great way to get started. Refreshments will be provided.

The Digital Media Studio and MakerSpace hosts an open house event on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2 – 6 p.m., in Library 260. This event is open to all SFSU students, faculty and staff.  

Learn about 3D printing, virtual reality, podcasting, audio mixing, internet-of-things/micro-controllers/robotics and video/audio equipment checkout. The open house will also feature special presentations of student projects with edge computing, artificial intelligence and more.

The “AI Literacy Essentials: Prompting for Practical Applications” course offers a focused exploration of prompting and iteration strategies for generative artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots like Microsoft Copilot. It will be held on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2 – 3:30 p.m., via Zoom. 

Through collaborative, hands-on activities and interactive exercises, participants will learn to write clear, effective prompts, apply refinement techniques such as prompt chaining, and assess AI-generated outputs for accuracy and relevance to achieve more reliable and useful results in a variety of academic and non-academic contexts. 

This course is required to receive a digital badge for the AI Literacy Education Program
 

Human Resources will offer a presentation on Friday, Dec. 5, 11 a.m. – noon, via Zoom called “Overcoming Procrastination: Tips for removing roadblocks to productivity.” It will help you learn how to prioritize, develop decision-making skills and demonstrate appropriately assertive behavior. LifeMatters, our employee assistance program, will give the presentation.

Learn the essentials of starting your own podcast at “Podcasting 101” on Friday, Dec. 5, noon – 1 p.m., in the Digital Media Studio and MakerSpace (Library 260).  

This beginner-friendly workshop covers the basics of planning, recording, editing and publishing a podcast, plus tips on choosing equipment and sharing your show with listeners. 

Faculty and staff are invited to help recognize SFSU students who will study abroad starting in spring 2026. The Division of International Programs will hold a Study Abroad ceremony on Friday, Dec. 5, 3 – 5 p.m., in the Student Life Event Center (Annex I). Doors open at 2:30 p.m. 

This is the final sendoff for students participating in a CSU International Program or an SF State Exchange Program. Light refreshments will be served. 

In gratitude for and recognition of all faculty and staff do in service of our students, the president and cabinet’s annual year-end celebration is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 17, 3 – 5 p.m., in Jack Adams Hall, Cesar Chavez Student Center.  

This year’s theme is “Gator Night Market” and will feature delicious bites from around the world, festive beverages and great company. Wrap up the year in true Gator style.

Also please consider donating to the Institute for Civic and Community Engagement’s toy drive, which runs through Friday, Dec. 19. Bring new, unwrapped toys, cards and gifts for ages 0 – 12.

SFSU Spotlight

Professor Emeritus of Mathematics and Computer Science RJ Douglas presented “Astronomical Curiosities” on Nov. 19 at the Randall Museum in San Francisco, at an event for the San Francisco Amateur Astronomers. Douglas is the author of “The (not so) Little Book of Astronomical Curiosities.”
