Summit named University provost
Jennifer Summit has been named SF State’s provost and vice president for academic affairs. Summit has been at San Francisco State since 2014, serving first as dean of undergraduate studies and more recently as interim provost while the University conducted a national search for candidates for the position.
“During the past 18 months as interim provost, Summit has provided thoughtful and strategic leadership, with a deliberate focus on both student and faculty success,” said San Francisco State President Leslie E. Wong. “Her leadership has been instrumental in our steadily improving graduation and enrollment numbers. Her ongoing work with our deans, department chairs and other stakeholders has laid a foundation for continuing success ahead.”
A specialist in medieval and early modern literature, Summit received her B.A. from Vassar College and her Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University. She served for nearly two decades at Stanford University as a professor of English, department chair, program director and director of integrative learning.
As dean of undergraduate studies at San Francisco State, Summit lead initiatives dedicated to academic excellence and student success. While interim provost, Summit launched a Budget Advisory Council in support of budget transparency and strategic planning; promoted data-driven decision making by establishing an office of Institutional Analytics; supported faculty development through the establishment of a Center for Excellence and Equity in Teaching and Learning; and spearheaded a year-long analysis of educational equity with the goal of eliminating student opportunity gaps at San Francisco State.
New director of athletics announced
Stephanie Shrieve-Hawkins, a seasoned college athletics administrator with two decades of diverse experience, has been appointed San Francisco State University’s director of athletics. Her appointment takes effect May 1.
“Stephanie Shrieve-Hawkins is uniquely suited to leading Gator athletics,” said SF State President Leslie E. Wong. “I am excited about the future under Stephanie’s leadership.”
Shrieve-Hawkins will lead an athletics program featuring 12 teams and over 250 student-athletes competing in NCAA Division II. A member of the California Collegiate Athletic Association, SF State has enjoyed noteworthy success in men’s basketball, men’s soccer and men’s wrestling. The school’s women’s outdoor track and field team is currently the top-ranked program in NCAA Division II.
“I am honored and proud to serve as the new director of athletics at San Francisco State University,” said Shrieve-Hawkins, who has served since 2006 as associate athletic director at Saint Mary’s College of California. “Gator athletics has a strong foundation of success both academically and athletically. I am looking forward to working with the student-athletes, coaches and staff who have sustained that success.”
Taste of the Bay is on the way
Tickets are on sale now for the annual Taste of the Bay fundraiser, which gives participants a chance to sample the Bay Area’s best in dining, wines and more. The student-run event will be held Thursday, April 26, from 6 to 9 p.m. at City View at METREON in San Francisco. All proceeds benefit the Hospitality and Tourism Management Program and its students.

Presenters sought for graduate student research showcase
The Graduate Research and Creative Works Showcase is an annual exhibition of the diverse work of SF State’s talented graduate students. Each year, more than 150 graduate exhibitors offer presentations, typically in the form of poster displays that depict the purpose, methods and results of their research or creative projects. The showcase is an excellent opportunity for students to share their work with the broader academic community, build their resumes and even take home prizes: Registered students will be eligible to win gift certificates, a digital camera and a laptop computer at a post-showcase dinner reception.

Call for applications: SF BUILD 2018 mini-grants
SF BUILD is seeking faculty applicants whose research relates to health inequalities in communities in San Francisco. Proposals should involve SF State students and encourage a sense of giving back to communities. A UCSF faculty collaborator is required. Priority will be given to proposals that address issues of social justice and health inequalities that are relevant to SF State students and their communities. Mini-grants of up to $40,000 each will be awarded to four successful applicants. For more information, click here. Aug. 14 is the deadline.
New Computing Applications minor for CoSE students
The Department of Computer Science (CS) is offering a new minor for non-CS majors titled “Minor in Computing Applications.” Over two years, students in this minor will take five courses covering topics like web programming, data structures and databases and learn about real-life applications of computer science to their major through an independent project. Prior coding experience is not needed, and small group mentoring by CS majors is provided throughout the program. The minor is offered through the Promoting Inclusivity in Computing (PINC) program, which aims to improve computing literacy and to increase the diversity of students entering the tech workforce. Loaner laptops will also be available to the students through the PINC program.

Institutional Research director candidates visit campus
The first of two candidates for the position of director of Institutional Research will visit campus on Wednesday, April 4. The candidate will make a presentation beginning at 2 p.m. in Thornton Hall 428. The second candidate will visit campus on Thursday, April 5. Gator Youth Sports Summer Camp returns
The Department of Kinesiology will be hosting its Gator Youth Sports Summer Camp June 18 through July 27, 1 to 5 p.m., for boys and girls ages 7 to 14. The department will also be hosting Gator Start, its morning enrichment program, from 8 a.m. to noon with a supervised lunchtime from noon to 1 p.m. The two programs provide a full-day option. The department is also introducing a new program called Gator Strong Camp. This program is for all athletes of any skill level between the ages 13 and 18 and will focus on enhancing physical fitness, teaching exercise and nutrition concepts, and developing leadership and teamwork skills. Active shooter presentations, April 3 & 4
The College of Liberal & Creative Arts will be hosting two active shooter presentations by the University police open to all faculty and staff. The presentations will be held Tuesday, April 3, in Knuth Hall from 1 to 2 p.m. and Wednesday, April 4, in McKenna Theatre from 1 to 2 p.m. The presentations are designed to create a mindset of preparedness, providing a different outlook on everyday situations and how those can help us in times of violence.
UndocuAlly training, April 4
Staff and faculty are invited to participate in an UndocuAlly training. The training has been designed to guide the SF State community in learning how to support the undocumented student population. Participants will receive an overview of recent legislation and ways to support undocumented students while hearing the stories of current SF State students and learning about resources available for current and prospective undocumented students. “Giver’s Gain” peer review workshop, April 16
Faculty are invited to participate in a workshop, “Giver’s Gain: Why Teaching Students to Talk the Talk in Peer Review Improves Learning,” offered by Melissa Graham Meeks, director of professional development for Eli Review, an online platform facilitating feedback-centric classrooms. The workshop will take place on Monday, April 16, from noon to 1:30 p.m. and on Tuesday, April 17, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in LIB 121. Participants will learn how to teach reviewers to do the heavy lifting in peer review so that they better revise their own work. Bring a laptop to participate in the hands-on, online peer-learning activity. Lunch will be served, and lecturers receive a small stipend for attending.

“The Future of Conservation” discussion, April 24
Gary Machlis and Jon Jarvis will come to campus as part of the national tour for their new book, “The Future of Conservation in America: A Chart for Rough Water.” Jarvis, a former director of the National Park Service and executive director of UC Berkeley’s Institute for Parks, People and Biodiversity, and Machlis, a professor of environmental sustainability at Clemson University, will speak in Jack Adams Hall on Tuesday, April 24, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Their lecture will be followed by a book signing from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.

Trade war — what is it good for?
Assistant Professor of Economics Venoo Kakar spoke with KTVU about President Trump’s recent tariff announcement. “Policies like tariffs are protectionist in nature for certain industries. The goal here is to protect the steel and aluminum industries — protect domestic production and increase domestic capacity utilization," she explained. Kakar emphasized that the economy may experience negative consequences if there is a trade war as inflationary pressures can kick in prompting the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates, which can slow economic growth and hurt U.S. exports and corporate earnings. Rabelo gets ELEVATEd
Assistant Professor of Management Verónica Rabelo has been named an ELEVATE fellow by the Penn Center for Minority Serving Institutions. ELEVATE (Enriching Learning, Enhancing Visibility & Training Educators) fellows take part in an annual training program designed to address the unique needs of early career faculty members at minority-serving institutions. This year’s ELEVATE training will be held in Philadelphia June 27-29. Rabelo was nominated for the honor by the College of Business and selected from a large pool of applicants from around the world.

Journalism Professor Jon Funabiki spoke at “Represent! Forging a New Future for Journalism and Media Diversity” on March 5 at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit. The panel discussion was part of an event marking the 50th anniversary of the Kerner Commission, which investigated the causes of racial unrest and laid some of the blame on the “white men’s eyes” through which the news industry viewed the world.
